OLD LEAMINGTONIAN COLTS V KENILWORTH COLTS
7th February 2015
OL's 12-50 Kenilworth
The main story of this game is Olly Jones Hat Trick of 3 tries, after being Red Carded in the previous Home Fixture. Vengeance is sweet.
Although this was a comfortable win, at 12-36 with 15 minutes to play it did not feel like it.
Olly Jones 3
Hector Smith 2
Charlie Allerton 1
Alex Gyetvai 1
Callum Martin 1
Alex Gyetvai 2
Harvey Joy 3
The final score does not tell the story of this game. In the first minutes Kenilworth gifted Ol's a try when their centre, being passed the ball from the initial kick off maul, ran through terrible defence to score under the post. 7 Nil 3 minutes.
It took Kenilworth 15 minutes to get into this game. OL's were highly motivated and effective in their tackling and at the breakdown, frustrating Kens at every turn. It took until 20 mins for Kenilworth to win a penalty kicked to the 22 m line for their first effective attack. The ball was taken and the resulting driving maul went over the line resulting in a try for Charlie Allerton.
Minutes later from the kick off, the forwards again used the driving maul to force back the Ol's defence. The ball was released to Sam Bailey, who made a scorching run down the wing, pursued by Callum Martin, who took a brilliant offload from Bailey. Still one man to beat and over the line , up under the posts. 23 mins. Alex kicked conversion. 7-12.
Kenilworth had now come to life and in most of the play, were using an off loading and running game. Another sequence of play from the kick off saw Gyetvai over for a score in the corner.
7-17 no conversion. 25 mins
The Kens now dominated possession and even when Ol's did get the ball it was often stolen by great tackling or forcing over at the breakdown. On one of these occasions Kenilworth won a penalty kicked to just beyond half way. The ball won, was worked to a rolling maul and then up to the 22. The release to a pre planned move saw Hector Smith take the ball at speed and slice through the defence to score under the posts. Conversion by Alex 7-24. 35 mins
From the kick off Bailey took the ball and run through most of the defence until a cloth line tackle brought him to a halt. This was probably a good moment for the ref to blow HALF TIME.
The kick off from Ol's did not really give the Leams boys much respite. The ball was caught by Charlie who is not an easy guy to budge. He offloaded to Olly Jones who ran on to the ball at speed and off up the pitch 3 ineffective tackles later he was in under the posts. Conversion Harvey Joy.
7-31 2 mins s/h
There now followed a sustained period of Leamington pressure and for 15 minutes OL's were on top. Including a period of play where Kenilworth, instead of touching the ball down in the try area and going for a drop out, decided to run the ball from behind the posts - crazy.
Against the run of play, Kenilworth now turned over a OL's scrum in their own half, the resulting ball was passed down the line to Smith, who broke through the centre and was brought down by the Full Back on the OL's 22. The ball was swiftly played by the forwards through 3 phases and on to Olly Jones hands, who broke over for the try. 15 mins s/h No conversion. 7-36
Ol's continued to fight and for 10 mins had the better of Kenilworth. A penalty conceded by the Kens, was kicked for the corner and the resulting possession was mauled to the 5 yards line. Kens held the maul back but the number eight broke free and scored in the corner. 12-36 25 mins s/h
With 10 minutes left to play Kenilworth put fresh legs into the scrum as Leamington faded. Kenilworth took control and possession was all in the Kens hands. Successive phases of play saw Kens drive up into the Ol's half. The forward were hauled to a halt on the 5yards line with no scum half available. Hector Smith took the ball jumped over the collapsed maul was tackled and stretched for the line. TRY. 12-41 Harvey Conversion 12-43. 30 mins s/h
Just when everyone thought it was all over, Olly Jones sprinted down the wing in the dying seconds to score, up half way to the posts to give Harvey a chance. 12-50 Harvey converts. Game over.
