Match Report Newbold Colts v Kenilworth Colts 29th November 2014
This was a match we should have won. Despite Newbold lying 4th in the league we had a full team out, but started badly shipping 10 early points before we came back to almost draw the match in the dying moments. One that got away.
NEWBOLD 24 KENILWORTH 24
Tries; Adam Wadey, Sam Bailey, Ben Chant,
Conversions; Alex Gyetvai.
The first 7 min of this game were played solely in the Kenilworth half with mistake after mistake giving away possession. This eventually led to a try to NB in the corner, 5 nil 7 mins. No conversion.
However, Kenilworth started to get their act together after 11 mins and a tapped penalty resulted in a driving maul that push and disorganised NB. The resulting quick ball out to the back and out to Wadey on the wing, saw him outpace the cover for a try. 5/5
Kenilworth were now in the ascendancy, and phase after phase of play saw NB pushed back into their 22. Kenilworth worked a clever move from a scrum only to see the final pass to the winger intercepted by NB. Nobody could catch him, under the posts 12/5. 15 mins
Our forward were now on top and putting NB under pressure, a great attacking move from the backs took play again into the Newbold 22 and the forwards took over from the popped ball. They drove right over the line but were held up. 5 yard scum to the Kens. We won the ball from our scrum pinged it out to Bailey who went over to score Alex converted 12/12 game on. 21 mins.
Newbold came back hard from the kick off and their final play of the half almost forced their way over to score in the corner, but the Kens were awarded a penalty to clear their lines. Half time. 35 mins
From the kick off NB upped their game and put pressure on Kenilworth this eventually resulted in a well worked try going over in the corner. A great conversion from the side lines put the score 19/12 after 39 mins.
For the next 15 mins honours were even, but eventually Kenilworth were undone by a quick tap penalty and then a resulting not 10 penalty which allowed NB to score again in the corner, no conversion 24/12. 16 mins left in the half.
Kenilworth now upped their game in an effort to come back and NB started to look tired, especially the forwards. They were now being beaten in their own scrums and under severe pressure at the break down. Eventually the pressure paid and Ben Chant went over to score in the corner 24/17 11 mins left to play.
For the final 11 mins, Kenilworth hammered away at NB. But it was not to be. The Kens won 2 penalties in the final seconds of the game 10 yards out but could not score. This was the one that got away.
