NEWBOLD COLTS 12 KENILWORTH COLTS 17
Not having played for three weeks and only having played two games so far this season it is fair to say that Kenilworth approached this game with some trepidation. It looked like we were right to worry when only 15 players turned up, including two just back from injury.
However, Kenilworth were the better team in the first half and dominated the scrum and line out starving Newbold of ball. The first try was scored by Harvey Joy from the back of a 5 yard scrum. Followed by another, by Will Franks from further out, but again from the back of the scrum, on 10mins. We did not have to wait much longer for the third and final score from Hugh Whidbourne, when Newbold having knocked on and stopped playing. Hugh picked up the ball and ran through the opposition playing advantage. The ref agreed and so had a clear run in from beyond their 22m line and scored under the posts. Alex Gyetvai got the conversion. 17 - 0 after 15 mins.
This was beginning to look like a romp home, but Kenilworth play became scrappy and further opportunities were missed.
In the second half Newbold came out a new team as Kenilworth faded. Injuries also played their part with players having to be moved around to fill holes. Newbold scored two tries and one conversion but could not get the required points on the board to break the Kenilworth defence. A great win away from home.
