KENILWORTH COLTS V LEAMINGTON COLTS
28TH MARCH 2015
This was pretty much a re run of the match at Leamington. A very motivated Leams Team, but with no subs, put up a stubborn defence and it took some of our best play to break them down.
Kenilworth 29 Leamington 5
Matt Slater 2
Harvey Joy 1
Jack Nicolls 1
Connor Henry-Blake 1
Alex Gyetvai 2
Right from the off this looked a difficult day out for Leamington. From the kick off a scrum was won against the head and the resulting ball rushed thorough hands to Slater, who went over in the centre to score. 5 Nil. Plus conversion Gyetvai, 7 Nil 5 mins.
The second kick off went to touch which we stole, a great break by Hugh Widbourne, saw him make 30m down wing and off load to Harv, then back to Hugh, then off to Slater then back to Harvey Joy over the line. Magic and 12 Nil, no conversion 10 mins.
The next kick off went short and Kens opted for the scrum. 5 phases later Slates went over again, 17 Nil and Alex converted 19 Nil. Leams in serious trouble and not touched the ball yet. 13 mins.
Leamington gathered the next kick off and Kenilworth seemed almost asleep, not used to having to tackle. Leamington quickly got the ball to the centre and offloaded to see a man thought the poor Kens defence and score. 19-5 no conversion 15 mins.
Leamington then lost a prop and the scrums were uncontested. However, from the next srum to Leams, the scrum half was slow on his feet and caught by the Kenilworth Wing Forward, he was stripped of the ball and popped to Slater. He broke through the defence and offloaded to Gyetvai who passed out wide to Tooze and on to the Winger playing for the first time. Connor Henry-Blake, with much left to do, beat his man to the line and spun out of 2 tackles to ground the ball. Great try, no Conversion 24-5 21 mins. Great start for the debutant.
Kenilworth continued to push and were dominant at the break down. Perhaps too much so, as Jack Nicolls was then sin binned on 29 mins.
At Half Time Kenilworth made a number of replacements and this and a resurgent Leamington meant that play became much more even.
In fact for the first 10 mins the Kens could not get out of their half. Even when they could, the bite of the first half was missing.
20 minutes on still no progress by Kenilworth and in fact only desperate defence by the Kens kept out Leamington from the Kenilworth try area. One particular attack thwarted by penalty award to Kenilworth resulting in a clearance kick to Half Way.
This ball was won and sent down the line swiftly to break the Leams defence. This attack resulted in a maul within the Leams 22. The resulting ball went out to Harv on the blind side, who skipped down the wing and offloaded to Jack Nicolls standing in for the winger. Nobody was going to stop him from 10 yards out. Try 29-5 no conversion. 30 mins 2nd Half.
In the dying minutes as Kenilworth began to get organised with all the subs now playing, Wadey was released down the wing but was stopped on the 22 when a try looked certain. Match Ended 29-5.
