Kenilworth Colts v Banbury Colts 12 October 2014
This game was a thrilling encounter against a good quality Banbury team, albeit missing some of their better players. We needed a thorough test before our Cup game against Stafford next week and this was it.
Both team started this game testing each others defence with strong forward play. However, Kens got the better of Banbury after 4 mins and were deep in their territory, when Ollie Jones charged down a clearance kick by the Banbury No10. Ollie chased and then the ball bounced awkwardly for the defence and Ollie touch down near the posts. Zack Templeton kicked the conversion 7 nil.
For the next 14 mins honours were even, but Banbury infringed 4 or 5 times at the breakdown. On the final penalty Oscar Haynes took a quick tap, off out side to the backs and Austin Tooze beat his man to score under the posts. Templeton Converted, 14 Nil.
From the kick off Banbury came back hard and Kens were pinned in their half for the next 8 mins. Eventually the pressure told and after quite a few penalties later Banbury broke over to score in the comer. No conversion 14/5.
From the kick off Banbury took the ball up in to Kens territory, but infringed at the ruck and the resulting long kick by Zack, set up a good position in the Banbury half at the 15m line. Great ball out to the backs and Todd Elliot, starting for the first time today at 13, made a great chip over the Banbury defence to set up a dash for the line. The awkward bounce again undid the Banbury Full Back but Hector Smith playing 15 for Kens was able to pick up the ball and touch down between the posts. Zack kicked the conversion 21/5 - 25 mins.
For the next 10 minutes from the kick off Kenilworth were pinned back in their half by a very motivated Banbury team. Their forwards drove over the Kenilworth line 3 times, only to be held up or pushed back. Stoic defence kept out Banbury and the half ended 21/5.
Banbury came back after the kick off re energised. They put Kens under pressure 2 or 3 times and eventually Kens conceded yet another penalty on their 22. Banbury quick tapped, out to the winger and over for 5 points. Poor defence. 21/10 The conversion was kicked 21/12. 3 mins.
The next 12 mins Ken parked their tanks in the Banbury half. Great forward play and interaction with the backs put Banbury under serious pressure. Banbury cleared with a booming kick downfield for it to be picked up by Kens Full Back Hector Smith and he made it all the way to the Banbury 22 beating 3 tackles. Banbury now under serious pressure but holding out.
Then Kenilworth score only for ref to call the final pass forward. The scrum to Banbury is then turned to a Penalty for dissent to ref. Banbury clear their lines. 20 mins.
Kenilworth win the line out and start a period of play that end under the posts. Its held up, scrum 5. 25 mins. Kens get pushed back from the resulting possession but 2 phases later are back behind the Banbury 22. Quick ball from behind the ruck finds Hector Smith now playing 13, who punches his way through the first tackle, skips the next and beats the full back to score under the post. 26/12. Zack converts 28/12.
Kenilworth with the game won start to lose the plot and ease off. Banbury still motivated make most of the later play, forcing an error in the 30th minute and scoring a breakaway try 28/17 It was converted 28/19. Banbury then put Kens under pressure for the last 5 mins and relief was felt at the final whistle.
