Kenilworth Colts V Nuneaton Colts 7/11/15
Kenilworth run league leaders Nuneaton close in an epic encounter influenced by the wet conditions and stormy wind. We also had no ref until Steve Haynes stepped in to referee the 2nds game and release a ref for us.
Kenilworth 24 Nuneaton 26
Harvey Joy 2
Right from the start Kenilworth took the fight to Nuneaton playing many phases patiently around the breakdown and then releasing the backs. On 8 minutes Kenilworth won a penalty in the centre and went for the corner. Too far out for kick against the wind. The line out was lost, but the cleared ball was run back up in to the Nuns half.
Nuneaton came over the top at the breakdown, penalty to Kenilworth in front of the posts. 10 mins. Conversion was missed against the wind and play remained Nil Nil.
Play then resumed in a similar fashion with Kens keeping most of the possession. On 18 minutes a long clearance by the Nuns caught out Kenilworth and Nuneaton scooped up the ball, out to their winger, who scored against the run of play under the post. Plus conversion 7 Nil to Nuns.
Kenilworth were not downhearted and continued to gain most of the possession. One set of play ended on the nuns 5 yard line with Kenilworth chipping the Nuns defence. The full back had to take the ball back behind the line and ground it. 5 yard scrum to Kens. The resulting scrum ball was carried by Charlie at number eight, stopped 1 ft short of the line. Kenilworth played again and the ref awarded a penalty. While this was being discussed, Harvey took a quick tap penalty and flung the ball down the line to Callum who went over to score. 22 mins. No conversion. 7-5 to Nuns.
From the kick off Kens were in trouble with the ball spilled. Nuneaton played the advantage and their Centre went straight through poor Kenilworth defence to score under the posts. 14-5 Nuneaton. At this stage the lead looked manageable, as Kenilworth were still enjoying most of the possession.
In fact one promising looking attack, had Kenilworth in the Nuneaton half looking dangerous, only for the ball to be turned over in the ruck. Nuneaton played it out wide quickly and the winger ran half the pitch to score. No conversion 19-5. With only 2 mins left to play in the half, this was a disaster.
The game resumed from half time with Nuneaton looking much more aggressive and determined. Knowing what was coming with the change of ends. In fact it took some time before Kenilworth settled. On 5 mins they won a 5 yard scrum and despite their best efforts could not get over the line. The ball was passed out and neither could the backs.
However, the next attack was stopped illegally and the ball was kicked to the corner again. This time the forwards went over to score. Charlie Knight. No conversion 10-19. 14mins
Kenilworth again struggled against the determined Nuneaton defence but Harv broke the deadlock with a clever chip that forced the Full Back to clear into touch on the 22. The resulting maul from the line out, took the ball close to the line and with most of the Nuns defence committed Harv threw a long pass to Alex, who passed to Austin and went through the centre to score. Alex converted 19-17 to Nuneaton. Game on. Only 14 mins left.
Kenilworth now threw everything at Nuneaton to score. The pack were keeping the ball tight and were making good ground through the centre. As one attack went over the 22 the Nuns Hooker dived on the ball preventing play with his arms out wide. Penalty. The ball went to the corner. 6 mins left to play. Kenilworth threw to the back and the resulting ball passed was driven straight over the line by the forwards, Great Play! 1 for ben Chant. Kenilworth lead 22-19, Harv kicks the conversion 24-19. 4 mins left.
From the kick off Kenilworth went for the ruck and secured good ball. Unfortunately the ball was thrown back into the 22 and the clearance went straight out. Kenilworth had to defend a line out in their 22. Just one of those things. Any other day it would have gone down the pitch with the wind. Nuneaton won clean ball and were almost unstoppable. 4 more phases of play and they went over in the corner. Despair. Its a draw 24-24.
You just could not see him getting the conversion into what was a very strong wind from the touchline. But over it went Nuns win 26-24. Heart break for Kenilworth. Despite trying to score in the dying seconds and reaching the Nuns 5 yard line it was not to be.
