It was a dream start for the Kens. Right from the kick off Kenilworth attacked and drove the ball through successive phases up beyond the half way. The ball was released to the backs and Bailey went over in the corner. 5 Nil no Con. 5Mins.
OC's came back but Kenilworth defended staunchly for almost 15 mins. This culminated in a third held up over the line and eventually the ball was hauled into touch with Kenilworth clearing from the line out.
The next play saw old Cov take the line out ball and the rolling maul was unstoppable. 5 all. 26 mins
There was now a period of play where Old Covs had all the possession and were dominant in the scrum. Things looked ominous for the Kens. So it proved with OC's scoring again before half time to make it 5/10 36 mins Half time.
A great kick off saw the Old Covs under pressure from the restart. The ball came to Hector Smith just beyond half way, who beat the first defender and went on to score a great individual try against 3 more defenders. 10/10 4 mins s/h
Fresh legs now came on and Kenilworth Scrums improved. We were now holding our possession but OC were failing to make much headway in attack. Kenilworth tackling against the bigger team was just heroic with all players showing true grit.
With the scum now operating better Kenilworth scored from the base of the scrum. Harvey Joy cutting through the OC,s defence and off loading to Bailey who went over to score 15/10 8 mins s/h
Kenilworth then made one of few errors and conceded a penalty in their half. The ball was taken quickly and passed to the outside where the winger beat the covering tackles to score in the corner. 15-15 12 mins. S/h
The Kens were now were gaining more possession and down to the last 12 mins of play. Great movement by the forward drove play up beyond half way. The driving and off loading game Kenilworth were playing, was stretching the OC,s tiring defence. A gap opened on the left wing and the ball was flung out wide to find Adam Wadey with only one man to beat. He outstripped the despairing winger, who dived after him, leaving Wadey to run up toward the posts and make the conversion easier. 20-15. Harvey Joy, understudying for Alex Gyetvai slotted the kick with only 6 ins to spare over cross bar, 22-15. 11 mins to play.
From the kick off OC's attacked with fresh vigour seeing the match slip away from them. Unfortunately, Kenilworth conceded a penalty and again OC,s kicked for the corner. The inevitable rolling maul ensued and over the line clearly and scored. 22-20. No conversion.
6 mins to play from the kick off. Kenilworth won the ball from the kick off and it looked hopeful that play could remain in the OC's half. However, Kenilworth were pinged for holding on in the attack and OC kicked for the Kenilworth 22. 2 phases later and Kenilworth infringed again and all looked lost. Old Covs kicked to the corner and this is where play stayed for the next extraordinary 4 mins. Kenilworth defended as though their life's depended upon it and OC's were held up twice. Then on the third attempt OC were penalised for going over the top.
The ref announced, 'time for the line out' and Kenilworth kicked for touch. The ball was won – just and ran off the pitch.
THATS IT WE WON!
