Rugby St. Andrews 22 Kenilworth Cavaliers 33.
The Kenilworth Cavaliers maintained the season's momentum with another good performance against a strong Rugby St. Andrews XV in the penultimate match before the Christmas break.
Fresh from another cup win last week the Cavaliers returned to league action, away to Rugby St. Andrews. The first quarter saw the home side gain the upper hand as the Cavaliers, playing into a strong head wind failed to put together any meaningful phase play. Trailing by three tries with 30 minutes on the clock the Cavs finally began to impose themselves on the game. With Renowden, on the 1st XV come back trail following injury, starting to call the shots, the Cavaliers were now holding onto possession and it was not long before the visitors crossed the St. Andrews line - Renowden with the try, converted by Purewal.
The second half was dominated by the Cavaliers who now with the wind at their backs had found form and were starting to impress - Phillips and the Watts brothers provided the platform for Middleton and Rhys Jones to ask questions out wide. Indeed it was the experience of the Cavaliers and superior fitness levels (surprisingly!) that told for the home side whose 'up the jumper' tactics had now been truly suppressed.
Further tries from Renowden, L. Watts, R. Jones and Purewal rounded off a good afternoon for the Kenilworth second string. The only blot on the copy book was the particular lack of humility in victory displayed by one of our number. Here's hoping that a post match 'old- fart' dressing down will have done the trick and that is the last we see of such nonsense.
