Old Laurentian 2nd XV 7 – Kenilworth 2nd XV 41
OLs welcomed Kenilworth to Fenley Field for this first round Warwickshire 2nd XV cup tie, buoyed by recent results when they had their backs to the wall, knowing that this would present the biggest challenge they have faced to date.
OLs fielded their strongest team, on paper, so far this season and despite a late change felt this was an opportunity to show the Fenley crowd what they were made of.
Things started well as from the kick off the OLs forced the Kenilworth eight to concede a penalty which unfortunately O'Brien pushed wide.
This was, however, as good as it got, for the first 40 minutes as Kenilworth quickly showed their class, scoring three tries with two converted as a combination of good play and uncharacteristic poor defence allowed the visitors to build a 19-0 half time lead.
OLs were clearly shell shocked going into the break, and it would take a monumental effort to turn the deficit around.
To their credit OLs threw everything they had at the visitors, and for 25 minutes the two sides cancelled each other out, but for all their endeavour OLs failed to trouble the score board.
Kenilworth had now proved that they could defend as well as they attacked and aided by two yellow cards for the home side they ran in three more second half tries to put the game well beyond OLs.
OLs however grabbed the last try of the game and gave the home crowd something to cheer, as old stagers Reed and Shepherd combined to send the latter thundering over, just reward for his tireless efforts, O'Brien adding the conversion.
Kenilworth rounded out a miserable afternoon for the home side with a penalty to bring the final score to 41-7 in their favour.
This was a desperately disappointing end to this year’s Warwickshire cup campaign but OLs can have few complaints as the better side on the day took the spoils.
They must now re-group and move on as there is plenty to play for during the rest of this season and we wish Kenilworth all the best for the rest of the cup competition.
