In our first game of 2013 a young, spirited Cavaliers outfit eventually lost out 25 points to 34 to unbeated Old Laurentians 2nds.
The thought of taking on unbeaten league leaders Old Laurentians 2nds in the first game back after the Christmas break would have been enough for past regimes to cry the game off in favour of an easier afternoon but not this time- proof that operation 'kick- start the Kenilworth 2nds' is making positive progress.
Having been soundly beaten by Old Laurent's at their place there was a determination about the Cavaliers squad that this time things would be different and indeed they were for the majority of the first half. Boulstered by strong running from James Wade at number 8 and fleet of foot from Jez Noon in mid field the Cavaliers had the better of the opening 40 mins despite playing into the wind. First half tries from Lane and Burrows, both converted by Nick Prince saw the home side scored board tick over nicely but a mixture of niavety and basic errors from the Cavs kept the opposition more than in touch- half time score 14- 17.
The second half saw the visitors take a strangle hold of the game as now their tails were up led by some strong running through the mid field in particular. The second half brought about an unconverted try from Rhys Jones and a penatly from Prince but unfortulately the visitors powered away to a 24- 35 away victory to maintain their 100% record.
Despite the result there is a lot to be taken away from this fixture- the fact that we honoured the game in the first place (thanks to Dave Blackburn for stepping into the front row) and that we had 22 players available on the day are all good signs for things to come.
