Harbury 1sts 36 Cavaliers 5
The second game of the season saw us return to the scene of a comprehensive defeat suffered last year, with a determination that there wouldn’t be a repeat.
And so it showed, as the first 20 minutes or so we were dominant, permanently camped in the Harbury 22 with some very good phase play and carries from the forwards. Pressure was showing on the Harbury number 10 who was struggling to clear his lines with kicks getting charged down and clearances regularly not getting much further than 10 yards, we were in the ascendancy – Harbury even being forced to attempt a 3 pointer to try and get on the board (they missed). However, after some interesting decisions, the ref sin binned Collett and in the last 10 mins of the half, Harbury went over to score – 5-0 at half time.
Harbury, clearly rattled, brought on some of their big runners, and that seemed to unsettle our side as a mad 10/15 minutes of missed tackles and a lack of concentration let them in a number of times – although their kicker only converted those in front of the posts. But the Cavs weren’t to go down without a fight, and a pick from the scrum from Matt Jenkins, followed by an excellent burst by Joe Ballinger and good hands from the backs, lead to a score from Dave Fish, one of the many medics to have a good game.
Harbury were to go over two more times before the end of the game, but this wasn’t after an interesting and bemusing decision when a catch and drive was eventually driven over and held up over the line, only for the ref to give Harbury a scrum as we “weren’t going for a try”?!
Final Score 36-5. Don’t let the result fool you, this was a very good performance and shows the continued improvement in the Cavaliers over the past few seasons and things are looking bright for the future. Next up Stratford at home on the 14th.
