Kenilworth 3rds continued their unbeaten run with a festival of running rugby at Atherstone, beating the home side by four try's to one - in a game that had most things you'd expect to see in an afternoon of 3rd team rugby football! Starting the match with a full 15.....but that was all, with Bennet father and son making an appearance at 9 and 12 (I suspect for slightly longer than both had planned), Kenilworth sucked up early pressure from the not very slimline but mobile home side, keeping Atherstone out after a number of opposition scrums, before showing what they could do ball in hand. Johnno was first over following a darting run, reaching at length to ground the ball with his index fingernail despite the efforts of the home team defence, with MOTM Martin Howle next to go over during an outstanding performance of Neil Back'esq back row ferriting. Salmon like line out work by Powley and Ed hart allowed the K's backs to launch attach after attack, eventually deciding to shelve the poor juggling performance - the centre combination of RB and Yann combining to put Yann over for the visitors third try. With Jay Marvelli returning to cause havoc at 10 it has to be said all the girls tackled like deamons all afternoon, which, combined with the referees insistance on at least twenty minutes scrummaging practise at the end of the second half - meant Kenilworth 3rds to a man had won a hard afternoon on the park - proving as resolute in defence as they were effervescant in attack! Appropriately, the last try came from Rob Bennet, who having sobered up by this time cut through the Atherstone line to beat the fullback - capping an outstanding game at scrum half. A fine afternoon of hard fought rugby that will hurt in the morning for the majority of us - but was worth every second.
