MATCH REPORT 2011-2012/10
MORETON MARAUDERS – 10TH DECEMBER 2011
A feast day, but with added spice. Not only did we have the numbers, although late cryoffs meant a shortage of Front Row (Sean working and Alfie with manflue…. tart), but we did have a sprinkling of our Dreamteam backs and a ‘couple’ of Colts. A last minute call to Moonie (MOM) finalized our lineup and Game on!
As the opposition turned up, we struggled to see, as usual, but especially to spot anyone born much before 1990, i.e. they were younger than most of our kids! Not to worry, this week we were confident we would be more than a match?
Starting with our usual 3rds (Old Pharts) we competed well up front, as usual, although their pack were well drilled and competed well themselves, both in the loose and the tight. Moonie and Graham were all over the place, supporting Ed H and Clipboard at Second Row, with Guy H, Jacek and Gary Coulter making ground, pilfering and spoiling at every opportunity. This week, however, with our backline now more or less watertight, Gary S at scrummy and Glynn O at 10, clearing the ball from trouble and directing operations, with Ed N, Tim W, Wisey and Adam T threatening whenever they had the ball. A few simple mistakes unfortunately let Moreton in and by half time they were a couple of scores in front. The difference this week was that we KNEW we could pull it back.
A few changes at halftime, with Bruce D coming on for Clipboard at Second Row, PJ & George coming on for Guy and Jacek at Back Row, with Jamie A at Centre and Rory out wide. As the second half started, we were in great spirits. By 10seconds in, we had won the ball back from our KO and were inside their 22, with a series of pick and drives that left me hunting my lungs, coughed up somewhere back in our half. Time and again we threatened their lines, Bruce leading the charge of the Old Pharts, with PJ, George and Gary C devastating their defense. We eventually clawed our way back into it and with 10minutes or so to go we were less than a score behind. Moreton fought hard, never giving in, but again we pressured their lines repeatedly and with seconds to go we triumphed. The score settled at 27 to 26 in favour of Kenilworth.
Our scorers were Adam Turner (5), Jamie Afshinpour (5), Glynn Owen (5), Gary Coulter (5), The Pack (pushover 5) and Glynn Owen (converted 2…. But missed drop goal!).
All considered the game to be the best for sometime, hard, fast and evenly matched. Thanks to Moonie for the last minute show and Gary S, Glynn O, Jamie A and Tim W for evening things up for us out wide.
We didn’t do Man of the Match, but my vote would be for the youngsters, PJ, George and Rory (sorry if I’ve missed anyone). You slotted in like you belonged, accelerated the pace of the game, taking us with you to our VICTORY.
Next week we are away vs Shipston, KO at 2.15pm, so meet at 12.30pm, to leave at 1.00pm (it’s at least a 30min drive).
