Kenilworth BaBa’s 3 - Cov Uni (not so) Freshers 17
This was a great performance by a scratch BaBa’s side, deprived of its university students, against a thinly disguised Cov Uni 1st XV! No complaints because both sides played some good rugby and played a very enjoyable game. At the start it looked like Cov Uni were heading for a walkover ; scoring 2 tries early on, helped by some poor Kenilworth "tickles" rather than tackles! But the BaBa’s fought back and were unlucky not to score a try. A particularly enjoyable part was the performance of the u18 colts, all still 17. Louis Hamblett at full back, the wonderfully combative Ed Hannam, Ryan Hutchinson, the unlikely winger that is Sam Cullen and Jamie Giles in the back row were all outstanding. Jonny Cresswell made an explosive return at home hooker and it is only to be hoped that his rugby coaching duties at school do not include throwing-in! Ross Lowthian made a brief but belligerent appearance at no6 and in accordance with the instructions of our beloved coach RG was wrapped in cotton wool & cashmere! Rhys Jones was outstanding in the centre and, in the final quarter was a perfect foil to the tsunami that is Paul Grenney. Other fine performances came from Ben Giles, Ollie Brown (also as fine a drinker as his father and grandfather) and Lewis Deeley.
No question that the crowd’s favourite moment was the appearance of the rugby anti-hero that is known as Fitzy! He took on the ball from an explosive break from Ed Hannam and would have scored had he not, according to legend, stopped for a fag or to chew on a turnip!
All in all a very enjoyable evening and not a bad game for a random collection of lads and lags!
