Kenilworth Colts vs Newbold on Avon Colts
Saturday 14 April 2018
Kenilworth Colts arrived at Parkfield Road just as the warm spring sun began to burn through the cloud. A physically tough encounter followed, with Kenilworth securing a 20 – 17 away win.
Spectators peeled off their winter layers as Newbold kicked off with the sun on their backs. Kenilworth’s early pressure secured a turnover, a penalty and the first of the uncontested scrums within the opening 5 minutes. Quick hands from the scrum allowed Alfie Boylan to go over for the first try, with Will Morgan narrowly missing the conversion (0 – 5).
Newbold responded with pace and energy, going through the phases and coming very close to scoring. Kenilworth’s defence was tested and they did the job. Newbold though were conceding penalties and Kenilworth were having more success in the lineout. A further, physical 15 minutes followed, with Kenilworth securing a penalty kick on goal at the half-hour mark. Will Morgan’s boot secured the 0 – 8 tally. Just four minutes later, Henry Wood received the ball out of the scrum, ran hard, handing-off three Newbold players and powered over for a 13 – 0 lead at half time.
Newbold came out fighting in the second half seeking to make amends. Within seven minutes they’d scored a well-deserved converted try (7 – 13). Both sides were attacking and defending hard now and the next score came from Newbold bringing them within a point (12 – 13). Kenilworth responded when Sam Morris sprinted over in the corner, with a successful Will Morgan conversion providing a two-score lead (12 – 20). Undaunted, Newbold came back with a confidence-boosting try just three minutes from time (17 – 20). Kenilworth stayed in control though and kicked into touch for the final whistle, and a hard-won 17 – 20 win.
An exceptional team effort from Kenilworth against a very physical Newbold squad. A day when the team proved stronger than the sum of its parts.
